The Pythagorean System
Developed from the teachings attributed to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, this is the numerology system most widely used in the West today. It assigns the letters A through Z to the numbers 1 through 9 in a simple repeating sequence, so every letter of the alphabet has a fixed, unchanging value.
Because the letter values are so regular, the Pythagorean system is easy to calculate by hand and is the method behind most popular Life Path and Destiny number calculators. It also recognises master numbers — 11, 22 and 33 — and keeps them unreduced whenever they appear, treating them as carrying a stronger, more concentrated version of their single-digit root.
The Chaldean System
The Chaldean system is older, tracing back to ancient Babylon, and is built on the vibration of sound rather than alphabetical order. Its letter table is irregular by design: letters that sound similar are grouped under the same number, and no letter is ever given the value 9, since 9 was regarded as sacred and set apart from ordinary calculation.
Chaldean numerology is traditionally used for a name as it is actually spoken and written in daily life, and it favours a full reduction to a single digit rather than preserving master numbers. Many practitioners use it alongside the Pythagorean system as a second, older lens on the same name.
